Online MSW Field Placement Services

Online MSW Field Placement Services

Experiential learning near your community is one of the most exciting and rewarding aspects of earning your Master of Social Work (MSW) degree. At St. Bonaventure University, our online MSW students receive the same services and support as our on-campus students. The experience is guided and directed by St. Bonaventure University in collaboration with your on-site practicum supervisor at the agency where you complete the required hours. Placement support is included in the program cost so you can focus on your coursework, while we assist with finding a local site for you to complete your practicum hours.

Your SBU field placement team will:

  • Collaborate with you to secure quality placement sites that reflect your educational goals, desired practice specialty and scheduling requests.
  • Ensure that all field experiences meet CSWE accreditation standards and that the agencies and field instructors are approved prior to the start of your fieldwork.
  • Prepare you for fieldwork by providing a realistic idea of the work you will be doing and ensuring that you are ready to work independently in a fast-paced environment.

What is field placement?

Field placement is the required experiential learning component of St. Bonaventure University’s online MSW program. Through this experience, you will apply what you learn in the classroom to real-world situations, further helping you to become prepared for your future in social work.

How does the practicum placement process work?

Your dedicated SBU placement team collaborates with you to secure quality experiential learning sites that reflect your educational goals and desired practice specialty. They ensure all experiences meet accreditation standards, and the agencies and instructors are approved prior to the start of your practicum work.

How do placement services help me?

Concurrent coursework and practicum experiences connect classroom learning with real-world experience. Practicum placements provide the 900 hours of hands-on social work experience required to graduate. Your placement coordinator helps identify quality placement sites within your local community so you can focus on your coursework and build your skills.

How should I prepare for my practicum placement?

Your placement coordinator and the MSW Practicum Director are here to help guide you through the entire process. They will provide realistic expectations for the practicum experience to ensure you are ready to work independently in a fast-paced environment upon graduation.
